I had heard of it many times, but I just couldn't see myself taking the time to do something like that every day. It wasn't until my husband gave me a gift certificate for a massage on my birthday that I finally decided to go for it and buy a dry brush while I was there. The lady who sold it to me said it would take care of everything from exfoliation to cellulite reduction. Sounded a little too great to be true, so I went home and did some research and as it turns out, dry brushing is really, really great for many things. Our skin, the largest organ, is responsible for 10-15% of body elimination, so dry brushing gives your kidneys and liver a break by helping the skin regenerate more efficiently. It helps to smooth and tone your skin, rid your body of dead skin cells and boost circulation. In addition, it has a cleansing effect on the lymphatic system, which is an important filtration system that helps eliminate toxins from your body. And, finally, it truly does help to reduce the appearance of cellulite. I know...pretty impressive.
Suddenly, finding 3 minutes a day doesn't seem like too much to ask. Using long, upward strokes (always use motions toward the heart,) start brushing your skin at your feet and work up your legs one at a time. On your stomach, direct the brush counterclockwise. Finish by brushing up your arms toward your armpits. And, don't brush too hard: skin should be stimulated and invigorated, but not irritated or red. Apply warm almond or coconut oil all over and hop in the shower. You won't need moisturizer once you get out. So simple.
I have to say I love that something so inexpensive and easy is one of the most effective things we can do to promote healthy skin. You're going to wonder why you weren't doing this all along. It's never too late though and it's addictive...just in time for bathing suit season. Happy brushing!
